About Lord's Seat [Rushup Edge]

Often overshadowed by the neighbouring Great Ridge, this high point on the sandstone escarpment of Rushup Edge offers a quieter, loftier perspective. The terrain is mostly firm moorland paths leading to a summit marked by an ancient tumulus, with expansive views across the Edale valley toward the Kinder Scout plateau.

Did You Know?

  • The name 'Lord’s Seat' uses the Middle English 'sete', likely referring to its status as a prominent natural vantage point or landmark within the local manor. It marks the highest point on the gritstone ridge that forms the northern wall of the Vale of Hope.
  • The summit is crowned by a Bronze Age bowl barrow, a prehistoric burial mound that suggests this high point has held ritual significance for several thousand years.
  • It serves as the western anchor for the classic 'Great Ridge' walk; while most walkers start at Mam Tor and head east, continuing west to Lord's Seat provides a much quieter experience away from the crowds.
  • The view south from the summit offers a perfect profile of the limestone 'White Peak', looking directly down into the dramatic, steep-sided gorge of Winnats Pass near Castleton.
  • Despite being 33 metres higher than its famous neighbour Mam Tor, Lord’s Seat receives a fraction of the footfall, largely because it hasn't spent the last century famously falling apart into the valley below.
